May Day

International Worker’s Day
The History and Meaning behind the Holiday

The International Worker’s Day, synonymous to May Day, is celebrated annually on the 1st of May and marks the milestones of the Labor Movement. The Labor movement or Labour movement is a broad term for the progress of working people, who fought for equivalent status from their employers and political governments in terms of wages, deference and treatment.

History

The Labor movement initiated at the time of Industrial Revolution, when majority of jobs switched from the Agricultural to the Industrial sector. This was met with great resistance. In the 18th and early 19th century groups such as Tolpuddle Martyrs of Tolpuddle, Dorset were penalized for forming unions which were against the laws of time. The movement gained major momentum with the publication of Pope Leo XIII's document, “Rerum Novarum” also known as “On the Condition of the Working Classes,” in which he advocated a series of reforms including limits on the length of the work day, a living wage, the elimination of child labor, the rights of labor to organize, and the duty of the state to regulate labor conditions. Following the release of the document, the labor movement which had previously floundered began to flourish in Europe and later in North America.

Throughout the world, activity by the labour movement has led to reforms and workers' rights, such as the 2-day weekend, minimum wage, paid holidays, and the achievement of the eight-hour day for many workers. There have been many important labour activists in modern history who have caused changes that were revolutionary at the time and are now regarded as basic.

The 8 Hour Day has been the most memorable achievement so far in the history of Worker Rights’ Riots.

Origin

The International Worker’s day originated in the United States of America, just like Baseball and Apple Pie did. Working conditions in the 19th century were not as pleasant as they are now. People worked at an average of 12-18 hours a day, which is now considered as exploitation of human resources. People were over-worked and under-paid. Many people suffered to death due to heavy working and most of the deaths occurred at workplaces. Child Labour was common and lives were miserable. Life expectancy rate declined to as low as 20 years. People wanted a revolution and that’s when the idea of socialism gained major momentum.

A variety of socialist organizations originated in the later half of the 19th century. Many socialist entered the political field, however their attempts for a change failed as the political field was dominated by big business owners, also known as anarchists.

At the National Convention at Chicago, in 1884, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions (which later became the American Federation of Labor), proclaimed that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labor from and after May 1, 1886." The following year, the FOTLU earned support from many miserable laborers and decided to hold strikes in order to support their statement. An year before the Haymarket Massacre, the Anarchist Newspaper published a statement saying “Whether a man works eight hours a day or ten hours a day, he is still a slave.”

Contrary to the misleading of many anarchists, the workers continued their struggle. On May 1, 1886, more than 3,00,000 workers from 10,000 businesses walked out of their jobs in the celebration of the first May Day or Worker’s Day. Within the next two days, the no. of workers who left their jobs kept springing up. Soon a riot broke out and people opposed the police with stones in their hands, to which the police answered with gun fired. About two people were killed and many were wounded in this incident.

Enraged due to the violence around, a public meeting was called at Haymarket. Unfortunately due to the bad weather, only about 3000 people reported out of the tens of thousands that were expected. The crowd remained calm, as the speaker August Spies made "no suggestion... for immediate use of force or violence toward any person..."

As the speech lulled, two detectives reported to the police that “inflammatory” words are being used at the public meeting. The police was quick in action and reached the public square. While the police attempted to disassemble the crowd, a bomb was thrown at the police, which ignited violence, resulting in the death of about seven policemen and about a dozen other people, leaving many severely wounded.

Later it was found out that the bomb was thrown directly or indirectly by one of the anarchist due to which twelve of the suspected anarchists were given death sentences.

After-Effects

Since then, Worker’s Day is celebrated every year on May 1. This day is officially celebrated in 66 countries and unofficially in many others. The US government tried to curb Worker’s Day from public memories by establishing “Law and Order Day” on May 1. Worker’s Day gives us the message to fight for our freedom, our rights and our respect. It is due to the efforts of millions that today we are working like humans rather than slaves and celebrating a holiday. This day marks the efforts of millions in their struggle for justice.

Veggie Whiners

Recently, I went to a party, and as any typical Indian Party, their were two sections in the food stall, namely, the Vegetarian and the Non-Vegetarian, placed distant enough from each other that the "Shudh" (Pure) Vegetarians don't get their food mixed with the "Mansaharis".

Now this made me recall one very sensible lecture from one of my teacher.

People who eat plants considers themselves vegetarians and those who eat animals are called non-vegetarians by others. But in India, the vegetarians enjoy a "Shudh" (pure) tag before the actual word, making vegetarians superior than the non-veggies.

A diplomatic search would end up with the result that non-vegetarians eat animals who cry and scream before they are killed, roasted, and ultimately eaten. And there are the vegetarians considering themselves pure, because they are eating plants...

Now a question arises, aren't plants living beings? Don't they get hurt?

Just because a plant doesn't shout and scream when you are cutting it, or plucking out it's fruit, it means that you can do anything to it and still be considered pure.

Just because a plant isn't begging for mercy, means that you can pluck out it's reproductive organs, fry them, eat em' and then call yourself a "Shudh" Shakahari. What would happen if the same thing happened with you? What if someone plucked out your reproductive organs and eat them, pure junk, ain't it?
Don't repeat what others are saying, you've got your own brains, THINK.

Hopes too High

It's getting worse than ever...
I never knew my life can turn out this way.

I am currently obsessed with so much things, that it might take a year to pen them down.
I myself have forced myself into this, and now I am lost. I am stuck in this maze, which I call puberty in which I can't get my way out, and I met with love, friends, money, success, studies, life, enjoyment, pleasure, and I have come too far in this maze.

I wish I can get out of here, but I know it's too late. My thoughts are jumbled and I am falling towards disaster.
I need to balance myself, and so I have decided, that people need to know what teenagers feel, and what are their wants.

I need to post the story of my life, but not here, cause this is more of an advertising space for me.
So I am gonna create a new blog, "A teenager's diary" where I am going to post the story of my life.

I will be creating it after my Annual Exams in March, so watch this space for it. myView Beta is still alive, but will feature more of miscellaeous things and money making strategies than thoughts of a teenager.

Hopes are high, and a little imbalance can make me fall.

An Orkut Story

YESTERDAY...
13th November, 2008, I guess if I will ever forget this date...The date when I learnt a new lesson of my life.

Since all the happenings in this day were important, I thought to make it as a diary post...Read it, its interesting, and has morals, too.

9:00 A.M.
It was our holiday today, so I woke up early...Oops, late.

10:00 A.M.
Morning chores done, finally, playing my PSP.

11:00 A.M.
Fine, I am going to orkut.

11:30 A.M.
Finally, net connected. Browsing the Tickr Community and creating posts there. Wonder my name doesnt appear on the MTV Tickr.

12:00 P.M.

I entered my scrapbook, and there was my friend's scrap waiting for me. It read "Dude, check my scrapbook, Lafda (Problem) ho gaya hai". I immediately checked the scrapbook, only to know that a girl, whom we called by the name of a car, has came to know about it.

I wanted to sue myself for scribbling that in my friends scrapbook, and the clear victim was...ME.I wondered at the time it all started. Me and my friend were talking about...females when he told me that the girls in his tuition are called by the name of bikes. I always dreamt larger, so took cars. Though I never started it, but liked the concept since you can talk about girls infront of anyone, without anyone knowing.

Back from my thoughts, I phoned my friend and asked him his reply, he said that he had controlled the situation and lied to her. My good ol' friend, always helped me in times of trouble. By the time I reconnected the Internet, the condition went fiercier. The girl has scrapped me regarding information on that car, and its relation with my friend.

I always loved making horror stories, and spooking my cousins, but this time, I had to switch to a love story, a love story, that never finished. I told her that the car was my friends EX, whom he broke away with months before. It was a nice story for sure, but as soon as I scrapped the story, my conscience reported to me. I don't know but something was ringing inside my head that I had done something wrong, by telling a lie.Later, I realized that it was the premonition of an upcoming storm. I asked my friend to tell her the truth, and here is when the situation went out of hands.

The girl hated lies more than she hated Himesh Reshammiya (you can guess now), and sued me for telling one. "What's wrong with her?" I asked myself, I mean I told her the truth and she's ringing up on me? Girls are something I never understood, I guess they are not as simple as computers, for me. Since then, an era of chilly words and paining scraps continued until she went offline.

1:30 P.M.
Things were calmer now. I checked out my friends scrapbook just to know that she had left some vulgar words for me, but she laid a lot of emphasis on the F word, which made other words sad. She even took a pledge to kill me at the coaching. Guess I had to leave a note informing the police to arrest my friend and her in case I never return home...NEVER...EVER.

After that, a 34:17 minute chat went on with me and my friend on the phone, and I had taken another pledge, to kill him, in case I am alive that day. To make things worse, my mother misunderstood that I was talking to a girl (My luck was never that good), and asked me several times regarding that half an hour call. An era of misunderstandings has now began ruining my life, on the day that carried the unlucky number...13

2:45 P.M.

Getting ready for resonance, a tiny thought still wandered my mind, whether she would really kill me or not. Were girls allow to kill a guy in public places?
I left for resonance at about 3:30 P.M.

3:45 P.M.

I found out that coaching timings had changed and were now 15 minutes later, well, that gave me more moments to last.I also noticed that girl once visited my classroom for a jiffy, maybe to target her prey or something. But she left feeling terrible, I guess she didn't spotted me.

5:39 P.M.

Maybe that girl thought I was absent and would consider me as a chicken, the same way like she considered me before when my computer got unplugged by my foolish servant and I couldn't reply to her sarcastic scraps. So, I asked my friend to come with me to her, just to show my face to her, and tell her that people do walk into wells sometime.

7:30 P.M.
Coaching over, I guess she would kill me now, I mean darkness over had an impact over killings, well, it makes them look great.

8:00 P.M.

Reached home, safely, and alive. There was one of my favourite cousin bro waiting for me. No one else was in the house, except my dog, but he always kept secrets. I told my cousin about all the adventures I had today. And the things my cousin said, is what I learned today...THEY ARE IN HINDI, SO YOU MIGHT HAVE TROUBLE READING IT, BUT TRUST ME, ITS WORTH IT...

"Ek ladki kisi ladke ko apna dost Dil se banati hai, jabki ek ladka ek ladki ko dost time-pass ke liye banata hai. Isiliye jab ladki ko jhatka lagta hai, toh uska dil dukhta hai, balki jab ek ladke ko lage, toh uska toh bas time-pass guma hai, doosra mil jaayega.

Jab usne teri koi burai nahi kari toh tu kaun hota hai uski udane waala? Usne tere ko izzat di, kabhi tere ko gaali nahi di, aur tune use hi aisa kaha. Kabhi bhi kuch aisa mat kaho jisase kisi ko dard ho."

He told more, but that was vulgar. These words really changed my mind. The mistake which I have been blaming my friend for, turned out to be committed by me. I was wrong. I was filled with guilt, really. I never experienced a guilt so strong. I had done something very wrong, and had also lost a nice friend.

I repeated the words in my head, She never did anything to me, then why was I so bad. What happened to the Abhay who once helped everyone, who was so kind, who was so good. Even I saw my conscience working when I wrote the story to her, but how come I can't stop myself. I was losing control over myself. Really, I was wrong, not my friend. It was my fault. I played with the feelings of an innocent girl. I was really a f**ker, her words spoken to me (the vulgar ones) seemed so true.

I don't know whether that girl will ever read this or not, since this blog is not so popular, but if she ever does, I would like to ask my deepest apology from her. May the guilty feelings be vanished now...

Beautiful Flowers Hidden between Large Leaves

While I was on a walk with my dog,I noticed a bush,it was an ordinary one,but had a unique feature.Other bushes must consist of just leaves, but this one had some small, blooming flowers stuck in between them.

I immediately grabbed some pics of that bush which you can see downwards.Even though that was quite normal to have small flowers sandwiched between the large leaves of the bushes, but as everyone should know,a writer always digs into a deeper meaning.I just sat on my sofa, and thought about the bush.I was somehow unable to get it out of my mind.

I remembered my old classmate,Ankit,he was a mastermind in his ideas. His ideas were really inspiring and sensible, even he had so much confidence and planning skill, that he escaped from the biggest of the biggest trouble that he had to face in school. But at studies,All I would say,is that he was "Not So Good".

He had the potential, but he didn't had the spirit. As a result, the mastermind remained un-noticeable in the class full of one after one toppers. So after hearing this, you should consider the toppers as the big, green leaves and Ankit as a small, beautiful, blooming flower.

Nearly most of the readers would have watched the movie "Taare Zameen Par".Though it was a lot boring, but it did showed us how beautiful and creative artists were criticized by the teachers just because their mind was diverted into everything, except studies.

This world has a herd mentality going on and everybody here needs to be studious here to suceed.Whether you want to earn respect, money or fame, there's only one way...Study!!!Creativity has kind of been banned in the world, where beautiful flowers remain hidden behind the large leaves.

The aim should be to discover these flowers, and open to them a whole new world.

Why Criticizing Vista?

About 1 year ago,I thought to read the Windows Vista on the Internet.I changed sites, but every site gave Vista a bad review. Some of the most important points about its dislike were-

1-Costly
2-High System Requirements
3-Too much variety
4-No support for some softwares and drivers
5-Bad performance in games
6-Security alerts every now and then

Now I am gonna kill all these points and prove that Microsoft has put its best in crafting Windows Vista to perfection.Stop Criticizing it.If you talk about the graphics, then other OS are no comparison for Vista.

1-Costly

Problem:People are saying that Microsoft Windows Vista is very costly.

Solution:Grapes are sour.If you can't buy Vista, forget it.Microsoft has been a leader in OS since about 1985.And its a Universal law that with time and experience,be it a person or any object-its value increases. So that's a very silly excuse for not buying Vista.Take the example of Sony PS3.It was very costly on the eve of it's release, but later it became cheaper. But those gaming enthusiasists bought home the PS3 At the costliest. So,If you have value for an object,Money will find a way.The prices of Windows Vista may also fall in the future.

2-High System Requirements

Problem:Vista requires at least 1 GB Ram to function and also a graphics card for full performance.

Solution:Time will heal everything. When I bought my PC 3 years back,it had just 256 MB Ram and I was respected for that as 256 RAM was more than enough at that time. And it costed me more than it will now.And the 128 MB Ram is extinct now.Prices of technology are falling month by month and a 1 GB RAM Today costs nothing more than Rs 1200.Just a month or two of money saving is enough for it.You can easily compare the old tech prices with the new one if you have any tech book of previous time and current.Previously a 128 MB Graphics card costed around 7000/- INR (the cheapest one) and now a 256 MB Graphics Card,Precisely double the memory costs just (2100/- INR)

3-Too much variety

Problem:Vista has 6 different editions to choose from making it difficult for the buyer.

Solutions:From Ice Cream to Girl Friends, variety is everywhere, then why not Vista. The decision is easy, just take any edition that suites you.You can goto the Microsoft Site for help. After all nothing except some softwares and the title screen changes with the editions.

4-No Support for some drivers and softwares

Problems:Vista doesn't support some drivers and softwares

Solution:Each and every driver of all compatible hardware is automatically installed by Vista and the softwares for Vista will soon be developed by the various programmers.

5-Bad performance in games

Problems:Games require much more highly configured system in Vista than in XP leading to bad performance in some games.

Solution:As I mentioned in the 2nd problem, the prices will fall. You can easily get a well configured PC with less tackling of your pocket.Vista will give you DX 10 and a special games center to get you playing the real effects of games.

6-Security alerts every now and then

Problem:Vista gives you a security alert every now and then hindering your productivity.

Solution:Vista is doing it's best to protect you from threats as many kids and foolish people would run dangerous applications that could cause harm to the computer. These messages can however be disabled from the control panel.

So that was all.Wait 3-5 years (depending on country) from now and you will see a PC running Windows Vista on every desk.
Great work Microsoft and keep it up.

Visit the official Microsoft Windows Vista Site

MONEY....

It can buy a House
But not a Home

It can buy a Bed
But not Sleep
It can buy a Clock
But not Time
It can buy a Book
But not Knowledge
It can buy you a Position
But not Respect
It can buy you Medicine
But not Health
It can buy you Blood
But not Life
It can buy you Sex
But not Love
So you see money isn't everything.
I tell you all this because I am your friend, and as your
friend I want to take away your pain and suffering...
So send me all your money and I will suffer for you.
A truer Friend than me you will never find.
"CASH ONLY PLEASE."
HA HA HA HA ..... HAVE A NICE DAY !!!!

Look around,and you will succeed

So you lost something?Finding it?Not Found?
Just a little suggestion, don't at the same place, look at more places, and you will succeed.

It may sound cheesy but this new philosophy of mine can change millions of life. It's simple, you need to be wide thinking to succeed in your life. You know there are billions of people in this world, but why only some are inscribed in the Book of History?Because they don't only believe what they have been told. They are deep thinking and wide minded.

Okay, you learn everything you are told, get good marks, pass through a nice insti and get a 6-digit salary in your job.You are married, have kids...abcd...abcd and you die.Finish.
Or..
Think wide, don't just learn, understand, make theories,do something great.Every life is not simple,as far as you want it.So make the most of your life.

The concept of Look around lies that don't keep looking at one place, whether it's your career decision, partner choice, your favourite artist or even an Mp3 Player (Some companies are better and cheaper than the iPod)

It's not only that trying again and again will make you succeed. It's trying again and again with different methods.

Look around, and success is waiting for you.

Good teachers automatically gain respect

Many of us think that teachers are now not given much importance and respect that they used to get in the older time.If you dont remember or are not familiar with the Indian Culture, then let me just say that in earlier times teachers,or "Guru Ji" were given so much respect and importance that people used to cut their thumb and give it to their teacher as a "Return Gift" or "GuruDakshina" for the vast amount of knowledge that they gave. Many Indian Philosophers wrote some lines in praise for them, some of them are-

"This mind is a deep well of darkness, and a teacher is the light that a mind needs."

"Even if you have to give away your life just to get a teacher who will teach you,it's a fair deal."

"If You have your teacher on one side and God on the other, give respect to the teacher first."

But it is continuosly being realized that the greatest teacher is not given respect,by the students in any institution, instead, they are given pet names which become popular in the campus. It's not the teaching style that has changed, but the Learning Method. The mind of the students now need to understand things in a more easy and comfortable matter than just copying the notes.Throughout my life so far,I have realized that many teachers who taught me and were "messy" or "hard" on the students were usually disrespected.

But one teacher, who taught me,Mrs. Soujanya Pradeep,is the best teacher who came in my life so far.She taught me English from Class 7th to Class 8th,and I must admit that it was the Golden Period (For English)in my life.

So I was never interested in English, but since she taught me,an inner appetite for Literature arose into me.She had some of the best qualities that another teacher in my school didn't have.Like Love and Respect for Our Country(India),Countrywide Experience (She had taught in a lot of schools all over India),Making English easier with extra curricular activities, and an amazing respect for Indian Freedom Fighters,Military and Great Author.

She was a walking dicitionary. So it all started when she asked us to show interest in English,I don't know why but I listened to her speech.I did showed a little interest and did well in my First Semester (Really well to be Frank). She noticed me,and encouraged me to expand my literature and vocabulary,I did the same, and by the end of 7th Class,I was the best in English in my Class. But due to this,I lost one of my friend, who broke friendship with me as he was too much jealous of it.I never regretted it since he was never a true friend.

In Class 8th,my performance kept getting better. Many students hated her as she was not able to complete the course on time, but that was no problem for me,as during that time she discussed a lot of things, even I used to sit quiet during her class.

Charmed by the power of literature I read a lot of books, including

Five Point Someone - Chetan Bhagat
One Night @ the call center - Chetan Bhagat
The Monk who sold his Ferrari - Robin S.Sharma
The Wishing Chair - Enid Blyton
Five Bad Children - Enid Blyton

Let me describe you that the first three books are novels of over 300 pages and I also read some magazines like CHIP,Disney,Digit and many more.

So it was her last class with us.She First told us about a quote "Practise random Kindness and senseless acts of beauty" which is at the top of this site with the title "Spread this Message".

She told us about a song called "Que Sera Sera" sung by Doris Day in about 19XX.The song, along with a video can be found at StoryLot.She told us to quit the herd mentality and do what we like.Obviously after the classes, every student said how much he will miss Soujanya Mam in the next session, they talked about her qualities, her knowledge and the fun we all had in class with her,she really made English easy.I was amazed,as though I thought that they disrespected her,she had already built an inner respect in them.So I realized that good teachers will automatically gain respect from each and every student.

She would be leaving school soon,so is the talk.Guys and girls,if you ever get a chance to study from her, never miss the opportunity,She is the best teacher so far in my life and I owe her big time.

I respect her and will continue it till I am alive.-Abhay Sharma
