Many of us think that teachers are now not given much importance and respect that they used to get in the older time.If you dont remember or are not familiar with the Indian Culture, then let me just say that in earlier times teachers,or "Guru Ji" were given so much respect and importance that people used to cut their thumb and give it to their teacher as a "Return Gift" or "GuruDakshina" for the vast amount of knowledge that they gave. Many Indian Philosophers wrote some lines in praise for them, some of them are-
"This mind is a deep well of darkness, and a teacher is the light that a mind needs."
"Even if you have to give away your life just to get a teacher who will teach you,it's a fair deal."
"If You have your teacher on one side and God on the other, give respect to the teacher first."
But it is continuosly being realized that the greatest teacher is not given respect,by the students in any institution, instead, they are given pet names which become popular in the campus. It's not the teaching style that has changed, but the Learning Method. The mind of the students now need to understand things in a more easy and comfortable matter than just copying the notes.Throughout my life so far,I have realized that many teachers who taught me and were "messy" or "hard" on the students were usually disrespected.
But one teacher, who taught me,Mrs. Soujanya Pradeep,is the best teacher who came in my life so far.She taught me English from Class 7th to Class 8th,and I must admit that it was the Golden Period (For English)in my life.
So I was never interested in English, but since she taught me,an inner appetite for Literature arose into me.She had some of the best qualities that another teacher in my school didn't have.Like Love and Respect for Our Country(India),Countrywide Experience (She had taught in a lot of schools all over India),Making English easier with extra curricular activities, and an amazing respect for Indian Freedom Fighters,Military and Great Author.
She was a walking dicitionary. So it all started when she asked us to show interest in English,I don't know why but I listened to her speech.I did showed a little interest and did well in my First Semester (Really well to be Frank). She noticed me,and encouraged me to expand my literature and vocabulary,I did the same, and by the end of 7th Class,I was the best in English in my Class. But due to this,I lost one of my friend, who broke friendship with me as he was too much jealous of it.I never regretted it since he was never a true friend.
In Class 8th,my performance kept getting better. Many students hated her as she was not able to complete the course on time, but that was no problem for me,as during that time she discussed a lot of things, even I used to sit quiet during her class.
Charmed by the power of literature I read a lot of books, including
Five Point Someone - Chetan Bhagat
One Night @ the call center - Chetan Bhagat
The Monk who sold his Ferrari - Robin S.Sharma
The Wishing Chair - Enid Blyton
Five Bad Children - Enid Blyton
Let me describe you that the first three books are novels of over 300 pages and I also read some magazines like CHIP,Disney,Digit and many more.
So it was her last class with us.She First told us about a quote "Practise random Kindness and senseless acts of beauty" which is at the top of this site with the title "Spread this Message".
She told us about a song called "Que Sera Sera" sung by Doris Day in about 19XX.The song, along with a video can be found at StoryLot.She told us to quit the herd mentality and do what we like.Obviously after the classes, every student said how much he will miss Soujanya Mam in the next session, they talked about her qualities, her knowledge and the fun we all had in class with her,she really made English easy.I was amazed,as though I thought that they disrespected her,she had already built an inner respect in them.So I realized that good teachers will automatically gain respect from each and every student.
She would be leaving school soon,so is the talk.Guys and girls,if you ever get a chance to study from her, never miss the opportunity,She is the best teacher so far in my life and I owe her big time.
I respect her and will continue it till I am alive.-Abhay Sharma
